Derbies

The Real Madrid-Barcelona 'Clasico' is probably the most important clash in the world of football at club level. There are nevertheless other great pairings throughout the world that are also highly anticipated by football fans all over the planet.


Manchester United–Liverpool
Each team has won 18 titles and no other English side has won as many leagues as them. Both cities are just 50 km apart. ManU are a symbol of modernity, while Liverpool have a more traditional character. Another important clash in England is that between London side Arsenal and neighbours Chelsea.

Milan–Juventus
It's hard to pinpoint one classic match in the Calcio, but those between Milan and Juventus bring together the teams with the most Scudetto titles in the country. Juventus have 27, while Inter Milan and AC Milan have 17 each, therefore encounters between Juventus and Inter Milan are also of a monumental nature. Roma-Lazio derbies are also of great importance.

Olympique Marseille–Paris Saint-Germain
These are the only two French sides with continental titles and they dominated the football scene in the country until Olympique Lyonnais took centre stage. Both teams, as well as Saint-Etienne, have followers throughout France. Marseille-PSG games are of a relatively new nature, given that the Parisian club was founded in 1970. Their rivalry stemmed from the incredible success PSG had in the 1980s.

Celtic-Rangers
These are the most successful football clubs in Scotland, having won 90% of Scottish league titles between them. They have both also reached European finals. The rivalry between both sides is probably the fiercest in Europe.

Boca Juniors-River Plate
Games between these two Argentinean teams are full of passion and tension. Just as the Spanish Clasico, they monopolise the media and paralise the country's activity for 90 minutes. The rivalry stemmed from the fact that both sides shared the same district in Buenos Aires in the early 20th Century, but nowadays River is associated with the upper classes, while Boca is lauded as the representative of the working class.

Olympiakos–Panathinaikos
The rivarly between these two Athenian teams is also one of the strongest in the continent. They also happen to be the most successful Greek clubs in football history.

Galatasaray–Fenerbahce
Both clubs dominate the football scene in Turkey and they both come from istanbul. Galatasaray reside in the European part of the city while Fenerbahce come from the Anatolian region.
